50g Platinum Bar: frequently asked questions

The cheapest 50g platinum bar we track is $2,950.39, based on 50g of .9995 fine platinum at the current $1,680.00 spot price. Platinum prices move independently of gold and silver, so check live prices before buying.
Platinum is significantly rarer than gold in terms of annual mine supply, with production concentrated in a small number of locations, primarily southern Africa. Despite this relative scarcity, platinum has traded below gold in price for much of recent history due to differences in industrial demand patterns and investment flows.
Platinum's current $1,680.00 spot price can be compared directly to gold on this site. Platinum traded above gold for much of the twentieth century but has more recently been priced below it. The gap reflects platinum's heavier reliance on industrial demand (particularly automotive catalysts) and smaller investment market, which makes it more sensitive to economic cycles than gold.
Unlike investment gold, platinum bars are not VAT-exempt in most markets: UK buyers pay 20% VAT, and German buyers pay 19%. For capital gains, UK investors face CGT at 18% to 24% on gains above the £3,000 annual allowance; US investors are taxed up to 28% on long-term gains.
Standard investment-grade platinum bars are 999.5 fine, meaning 99.95% pure platinum. This meets the minimum threshold for investment-grade platinum recognised in most markets. A 50g bar at this purity contains 49.975g of pure platinum, with the balance consisting of trace refinery elements.
