Engelhard: frequently asked questions

Engelhard exited the retail bullion market in 1988, ending production of silver, gold, and platinum bars. The company then focused on industrial catalysis and specialty chemicals. In 2006, German chemical manufacturer BASF acquired Engelhard Corporation for US$5 billion, and the Engelhard name was phased out by 2010 when the US operations were fully absorbed into BASF Corporation. All Engelhard bars now available are secondary-market pieces.
Engelhard bars are a finite, discontinued product: no new bars have been made since 1988. The brand built a decades-long reputation as a major precious metals refiner, and certain production series (early serial-number runs, poured waffleback designs, 1 oz bars) have attracted a collector following among stackers. This secondary-market demand, combined with the brand's history, pushes prices above generic modern silver at equivalent weights.
Not all Engelhard bars carry serial numbers. Larger bars such as 100 oz pieces typically have a stamped serial number, while smaller bars including 1 oz and 10 oz sizes generally do not. Multiple production series exist within each weight class, and collectors distinguish them by design details and serial-number prefix patterns, where present, rather than expecting a serial on every bar.
Key markers include correct weight within tolerance, the precise Engelhard font and logo stamp, and the .999 fine silver hallmark. A genuine bar will not be magnetic (silver is non-magnetic). Larger bars with serial numbers can be cross-referenced against collector databases such as AllEngelhard.com, which catalogues known varieties by weight, design series, and serial prefix. Professional third-party encapsulation by NGC or PCGS is used for higher-value pieces.
